It was a useful meeting. We discussed ways in which seemingly incompatible interests (skateboarding, crime prevention, biodiversity) could co-exist within a small park but this is going to need much more thought and discussion. Hopefully Robin will be able to post something about the meeting here soon.
Personally I reckon one of the main reasons the park is used so infrequently and therfore apparently unloved and neglected, is because much of it is in the shade, most of the time. Significantly cutting back the trees or even losing one of the trees would allow more light in for everyones pleasure whilst more desirable low lying vegetation, flowers & grass would also be given a better chance. It could also help bring into use the dark barron corners which seem to be nothing more than rubbish collections.
I'd really like a park i could use for reading a book with a cup of tea in the sunshine. At the moment it fails to deliver what i think a park should be - although I guess folks with children may find some benefit from the playground which is great.
The meeting was very constructive. If you want to be further involved, confirm your interest to join the Park Group at montpelieraction@hotmail.co.uk. The next meeting to follow up the 21 April meeting and put together a proposal to the Council (Central Area Parks team) is on Mon 20 May at 7.30 pm.
